Yesterday, Manchester shipping platform Shipster won the Digital City Systems Integrator award, for work executed during the pandemic and Brexit transition.
Digital City celebrates some of the best talent in the digital sector and explores what makes a leading digital city. This year’s judging panel included Stephanie Genin (Hootsuite), Kirstie Buchanan (CTI Digital), Mark Joyce (Sky Bet UK) and Kate Patton (Tech Nation), who assessed each contestant’s achievements, challenges and contribution to the digital sector in each category.

During a year that no one expected, the Shipster team consistently took quick and decisive action to benefit their clients without compromising on the day-to-day software support and the development of new features and integrations. Working from home, the team rolled out an effective Brexit Shipster version ahead of the Brexit deadline, continued to offer a generous pandemic support package (uncharged licenses for medical PPE suppliers) and continued to grow the company.
After all this, winning has brought a lot of excitement to the Shipster team, who have been working from home since March 2020,
"It’s always a boost to have your hard work recognized and I’m especially happy for us to receive a Digital City award. It’s been a tough, chaotic year for everyone in the shipping/logistics sector and winning this award is the perfect end to the last year. Big congratulatons to all other winners as well!" - Director, Tony Cheetham
"We’re really proud of how well our team adapted to the challenges this past year whilst simultaneously supporting clients through the Brexit transition. To have their work publicly recognized is just fantastic!" - Director, Hayley Cowburn
"We are beyond proud and happy to win the 2021 System Integrators Award! We linked up on MS Teams, to watch the awards and celebrate together. It’s also heartening to see innovative up and coming companies doing so well and being supported by the Digital City Festival along with its sponsors – thank you to everyone for their support!" - Director, Damian Donnelly
Due to the pandemic, the festival was hosted virtually this year, spanning two weeks 12th – 23rd April. There’s one week of the event left with plenty of online exhibitions, keynote speaker live-streams, masterclasses, roundtables, live Q&As and seminars with industry experts. Even a Digital City computer game with daily winners.
Shipster Director Hayley Cowburn describes how the virtual festival worked,
"I wondered how a virtual festival would play out with a big award ceremony and was impressed with what Digital City pulled together. For the two weeks that the festival is running, there are two live streaming channels on the login portal, a schedule of events, your own personal schedule for adding events to, lots of opportunities to live chat alongside presentations, take polls, make new connections and even host your own meetings."
The award ceremony was broadcast live from MediaCity on the 15th April with the BBC's Gavin Ramjaun. The Shipster team and many others were able to watch live on the Digital City online portal and Zoom watch Party, with live performances from The Showhawk Duo and Graeme Park.
The Shipster team also had a private team watch party for drinks, reacting together and giving each other a well-deserved pat on the back.
Shipster build bespoke integrations for eCommerce clients who need to connect their sales or warehouse software to couriers. These integrations allow orders to be automatically dispatched with the correct shipping information, documents and labels, using a custom set of programmed shipping rules to determine how each parcel is sent.
